The Marine Parade pathway and all the natural beauty the iconic area provides is now more accessible thanks to a ramp that has recently been installed near the Tom Parker Fountain.
The ramp was a key action in Napier’s Disability Action Plan and Duncan Pollock, a wheelchair user and his wife, Anne-Marie, say it’s great to be able to get to the Marine Parade walkway instead of going the long way around.”
We're also working on the installation of a ramp at the Sunken Gardens, which will provide even more opportunities for people with limited mobility to enjoy the beauty of the area.

More visibility for mobility carparksWork has started to make Napier’s on-street mobility carparks more visible. These carparks are being painted with bold blue and white wheelchair icons to indicate their importance and to ensure they are available for those who need them.
This initiative emerged from the 2022 Mobility Parking Review, which is part of the Napier Disability Strategy, and the council is currently implementing recommendations from the review.
Once the repainting is complete, contractors will begin remedial work on 12 mobility parks in the CBD and Marewa. In addition to repainting the carparks, we plan to install concrete pathways, handrails, and other accessible features to make Napier more accessible.
These upgrades are planned for 2023/24 and will run from the Tom Parker Fountain down to the Marine Parade walkway and into the Sunken Gardens, as well as include an improved pathway to the new BBQ area at Ahuriri Beach.
